CoNE urges against criminalisation of drug users in Manipur

CoNE president stressed on the need of providing medical attention instead of criminalising drug users in Manipur.

Drug users in Manipur have been criminalised, Community Network for Empowerment (CoNE) president Nalinikanta Rajkumar said on Monday.

The CoNE president was speaking as a recourse person during a one-day online training programme organised on the topic ‘Criminalisation of Drug Users: A threat to health and social development’ organised by District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Churachandpur.

Rajkumar stressed on the need of providing medical attention instead of criminalising drug users in the state. He also mentioned that there were reports and data wherein some rehabilitation centres in Churachandpur treated the inmates in subhuman conditions by using methods of chaining the inmates.

The training was attended by judicial officers, president and secretary of the District BAR Churachandpur along with its members, and representatives of Lamka Rehabilitation And Research Centre (LRRC), Social Care Ministry, Society for HIV/AIDS and Lifeline Operation, Manipur, Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, SHALOM NGO, Panel Lawyers, Retainer Lawyer, Para Legal Volunteers of Churachandpur district.
