The International human rights association (IHRA) has requested the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for de-recognition and to withdraw the funding of Maharaja Chandrakirti Singh’s memorial park under construction at Chivu in Churachandpur district.

A letter written by IHRA (Manipur State) president Mark Thangmang Haokip to the director-general of ASI stated that the said park has been constructed by distorting the history through political manipulation in order to grab the ‘Kuki ancestral land’, and it is a disastrous move which will endanger the life of the indigenous Kuki. The Manipur government has gravely violated the indigenous human rights, it said.

It further mentioned that the park is being constructed ‘under fake archaeological inscriptions which had never been heard about in real Kuki history’. It accused the Manipur government of using distorted and fake historical documents. It is the work of some dishonest academics in order to install the said park, IHRA said.

The letter further said that the Lushai-Kuki Expedition of 1871-72 was carried out by the then British government and king Chandrakirti, under the control of the British, was sent to help the expedition and it was not done for the expansion of the kingdom of Manipur. Thus, how the credits of that expedition should go to king Chandrakirti, IHRA questioned.
