All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC) on Friday stated that the apex organisation of supervisory officers in the banking industry, strongly denounces the “draconian ordinance” promulgated on June 30 by the Law and Justice Ministry prohibiting strikes in essential defence services, which covers almost all activities of defence production, repair and maintenance.

AIBOC also extends support to the struggle launched by various trade unions in ordnance factories opposing the decision of the government to corporatise the 41 ordnance factories under the Ministry of Defence, AIBOC stated in a release issued by general secretary Soumya Datta.

The Ordnance Factory Board has 41 Units which fortifies our national defence capabilities, AIBOC stated. The government’s steps towards corporatisation of these units and banning the strikes in ordnance factories are clearly paving the way towards the eventual privatisation of defence production, it mentioned.

It further stated that AIBOC calls upon the government to withdraw the ordinance banning strikes, which goes against the workers right to peacefully hold protest, which is enshrined in the Indian Constitution. AIBOC also demands that the government open immediate dialogue with the protesting unions on the issue of corporatisation of OFB, it stated. In the backdrop of the economic crisis, public sector units should be strengthened in all spheres and privatisation prevented at all costs, it added.
