Accused in physical assault case sent to custody

The accused Thokchom John, 34, son of Th Rajendro of Singjamei Thongam Leikai, Imphal West has been alleged of taking part in a mob and physically assaulting one Longjam Jibanlata. John allegedly pulled her down from a moving police vehicle when she was being rescued.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West on Friday remanded a man accused of physically assaulting a woman, in judicial custody for fifteen days till July 9.

The accused Thokchom John, 34, son of Th Rajendro of Singjamei Thongam Leikai, Imphal West was produced before the court through video conference after completing five-day police custody.

The court heard the additional public prosecutor for the state M Jamuna Devi assisted by the investigating officer of the case SI S Robert Singh and LAC on behalf of the accused person.

John has been alleged of taking part in a mob and physically assaulting one Longjam Jibanlata. John allegedly pulled her down from a moving police vehicle when she was being rescued.

It is also alleged that the accused was seen chasing the victim and trying to assault her again and when police intervened, and also obstructed the police personnel.

It is also alleged that the accused was absconding until his arrest on June 18 at around 6:00 pm.

After hearing and examination of the facts and materials, the court opined that there exists prima-facie material suggesting that the accused person has committed the alleged offence.

He was remand in judicial custody to refrain from absconding and hampering or tampering with witnesses and evidence of the case.
