YFPHR appeals for termination of MSCW chairperson Binota Meinam
YFPHR stated that it is shocked to observe the “deliberate misuse of power” in the name of MSCW in many of the instances since Binota Meinam took charge as chairperson.
Youth’s Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) on Wednesday alleged chairperson, Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) Binota Meinam of misusing her powers and appealed to the chief minister and governor to immediately terminate her from her post.
In a release signed by its president Kh Phajaton, YFPHR stated that it is shocked to observe the “deliberate misuse of power” in the name of MSCW in many of the instances since she took charge as chairperson. The misuse of power by Meinam could be learned from the recent incident wherein the High Court of Manipur suspended the case proceeding of Case No: 42 of 2021 of MSCW, YFPHR stated.
YFPHR strongly condemned the repeated and intentional act of Meinam which is totally against the welfare of women, it added.
On November 26, 2019, the same misuse of power was recorded when Meinam and OC Sekmai Kiran forced one Rebecca to sign a ‘deed of divorce' with threats, which was completely illegal, YFPHR alleged. For breaching her powers, YFPHR had submitted a communication on December 3, 2019 to chief minister, minister of Social Welfare, and governor to terminate Meinam from the post of chairperson, MSCW, it stated.
However, no positive action was taken and as a result, she continued to commit repeated mistakes, the release stated.
YFPHR further alleged that Meinam is not acting for the welfare of the women, citing another case wherein YFPHR had submitted a complaint case bearing commission’s RR No: 2/2019/MSCW/RR/251, requesting the commission to make an intervention in a case wherein two conflicting parties were made to sign an ‘agreement of separation’ by one Robita Leima. However, the matter was kept aside without providing valid reason till date, the release stated.
“We have strong fear that the commission is no longer a statutory body but a body which can be influenced by other organisations as seen in the recent case. We also fear for the future of women of Manipur if she is kept as the chairperson of the commission,” it added.
