Nagaland on Wednesday received 45 new ventilators from the Health and Family Welfare Ministry (MoHFW), Government of India. Before this latest allotment, the state had 39 ventilators--13 in Dimapur, nine in Kohima and the rest one or two each in various districts of the state.

Expressing his gratitude to the Health and Family Welfare Ministry on behalf of the state, Nagaland Health Minister S Pangnyu Phom tweeted, “Thankful to the @MoHFW for allotment of 45 new ventilators to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The facility will be distributed according to need basis, covering the entire districts of the State.”

The Nagaland health minister then said, “Our effort to avail all basic medical requirements will continue to usher in the best service".

The latest happy news of Nagaland on the health sector has added immense reasons to celebrate, even as the second laboratory for COVID-19 sample test, which will be inaugurated on June 29, is going to enhance measures against COVID-19 spread in the state.

The biosafety level-2 (BSL-2) laboratory at the Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research (CIHSR) in Dimapur will be inaugurated on June 29.

According to the health minister, the laboratory will immediately become operational after the inauguration. Once the laboratory in Dimapur is functional, the rate of sample testing for COVID-19 in Nagaland will be increased manifold.

At present, Nagaland depends on the sole laboratory at Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) for COVIFD-19 testing.

It is also worthwhile to note here that Nagaland’s first Biosafety Level (BSL)-3 lab for COVID-19 testing was inaugurated at Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) on May 21.

Prior to this development, samples from the State were taken to Assam or Manipur for COVID-19 testing.
