The Sub Jail in Jiribam has started functioning as a temporary Lock-Up facility from Thursday.
Located in Babupara, Jiribam, the Sub Jail was established in 1964 and was fully functional for several years. However, due to years of remaining unutilised, the facility had been reduced to such deplorable conditions that it took quite some time to complete renovations.
The renovation of the old Sub Jail was carried out in accordance to an order issued by the joint secretary (home), Manipur government on May 29 to utilise the facility as a temporary lock-up for people who comes out in public without adhering to the SOPs issued by the state government along with wayward COVID -19 patients at Covid care centres or in isolation.
After the renovation was completed, SP, Jiribam A Ghanashyam Sharma formally inaugurated the newly renovated facility in a simple ceremony held on Thursday. The inaugural ceremony also witnessed the attendance of ADC Jiribam S Indrajit Singh along with high-ranking police officials and media personnel from Jiribam district.
Manipur Renewable Energy Development Agency (MANIREDA) has donated ten (10) solar lamps for use in the temporary Lock-Up, the SP said, mentioning that the facility will now be fully functional with police personnel on duty all around the clock.
