Government limits use of loudspeakers from 8 am to 6 pm in Imphal West

Use of loudspeakers for creating public awareness and enforcing Covid-19 related protocols in localities of Imphal West in the public interest has been limited between 8 am to 6 pm, according to an order issued by the Imphal West district magistrate in an effort to prevent misuse of loudspeakers during the pandemic.

District Magistrate Th Kirankumar stated in an order issued on Tuesday that following the reports of increasing cases of misuse of loudspeakers in several parts of the district by several groups during the pandemic, the use of loudspeakers has been limited to ensure peaceful environment.

"It is learnt from various sources that there are increasing cases of misuse of loudspeakers in various localities of Imphal West district during the pandemic by a number of NGO, CSO, clubs, etc, without obtaining prior permission from the competent authority which is a violation of the provisions of the Manipur Control of the Use and Play of Loudspeakers Act 1976... During the pandemic, the indiscriminate use of loudspeakers not only creates nuisances to the public but also disturbs the peaceful environment in the locality," the order stated.

According to the district magistrate order, limited use of loudspeakers for creating public awareness and enforcing Covid-19 related protocols may be allowed in the localities in public interest only between 8 am to 6 pm in Imphal West district, It also stated that the volume of the loudspeaker should be in "low tone".

Use of loudspeakers to alert the public to enforce certain rules and create awareness in residential areas in the public interest is common in all districts and all parts of Manipur.
