To provide necessary medical assistance to the drivers and transporters who frequently travel within the state and along the national highways, Transporter and Drivers’ Council (TDC) donated an ambulance having basic life support equipment to All Manipur Road Transport Driver and Motor Worker’s Union (AMRTDMWU) on Saturday.

The ambulance was handed over by president of TDC, Hijam Ranjit to general secretary of AMRTDMWU, Maimom Anil at his residence located at Kakwa Sorokhaibam Leikai, Imphal.

Ranjit told that the ambulance is equipped with major life support and it can provide the basic necessary medical assistance for the drivers and transporters at the time of emergency. The ambulance will be on service for 24x7, he added.

He continued that there had been various unwanted incidents along the highways where some drivers succumbed to their injuries due to lack of immediate medical support. Considering the plight faced by the drivers and transporters, TDC has donated the ambulance to the drivers’ union, Ranjit said.

He also appreciated Medline for donating a first aid kit for the ambulance.

Appreciating TDC, general secretary of AMRTDMWU, M Anil said that the initiative will be of great help and support for the drivers who are serving the state by travelling along the highways. The union shall provide more assistance to the drivers, he added.

He also mentioned that as the state government imposed curfew in the seven districts of Manipur to prevent further spread of COVID-19, there had been incidents reported to the union that police personnel had detained some drivers and even physically assaulted. As per order issued by the state home department, it stated that transport services for essential commodities are exempted from the curfew, he added.

Concerning the issue, Anil appealed to the state government to look into the matter as some of the drivers are facing major problems while doing their service of carrying the essential commodities for the welfare of the state.
