The 44 Assam Rifles under the aegis of 22 Sector Assam Rifles IGAR (E) on Saturday observed the World Red Cross Day in Tamenglong. All rank and files of 44 Assam Rifles paid tributes to the humanitarian agency for their great contribution in helping the people in need.

On the occasion, 44 Assam Rifles adjutant major D Singh Gusain said that the World Red Cross Day is celebrated every year on May 8 to commemorate the principles of International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, and also to draw attention of the public to the humanitarian activities carried out by Red Cross and its affiliated organisations. The day is also the birth anniversary of Red Cross founder Henry Dunant, the Swiss humanitarian who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901, he said.

The Red Cross Society mission works to alleviate human suffering, protect life and health, and uphold human dignity, especially during armed conflicts and other emergencies, he added.

“It is not only about alleviating the dignity of an individual but also about protecting the lives of the people from natural disasters like an earthquake, floods, storms, epidemic disease etc. It is celebrated worldwide by the Red Cross organisations to assist people keeping in mind the fundamental principles of the Red Cross organisation such as Independence, Humanity, Impartiality, neutrality, universality, unity and voluntary,” he said.

The adjutant further said that the nationwide second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has been even more severe with cases spiking to thousands, bringing life to standstill. With the launch of Phase-3 of the COVID 19 vaccination, awareness campaign by the government, frontline workers and other agencies have speeded up.
