Condemning the authorities for allegedly neglecting the five-month long issue concerning admission to Master’s degree in Manipur University of Culture (MUC), student bodies from cultural institutions of Manipur have demanded the vice-chancellor, authority and academic council of the MUC to resign from their respective posts.
The student bodies had launched various agitations demanding the authority concerned to allow them admission in master’s degree at MUC, stated a joint release from the student bodies of Shri Shri Balmukunda Dev Music College (SSBDMC), Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) and GDC on Thursday.
The demand was made five months ago but the state government is not taking any initiative to resolve the issue, it stated.
It further stated that the MUC vice chancellor was appointed recently in view of the issue in which students who had passed out from SSBDMC, JNMDA and GDC were trying to take admission at the University. The academic council of the university is the highest authority to take any resolution of the institution, it added.
But both VC and academic council have not taken any steps in this regard. Considering the matter, the student bodies demand that they must resign from their respective posts. Besides, the institution should not conduct any kind of academic activities, it added.
It stated that any students who had pursued diploma or visharad along with bachelor’s degree are eligible to take admission for master degree in any central university. The system is even followed in Manipur University till date. Therefore, the prohibition to pursue a master's degree to the students of JNMDA, GDC and SSBDMA in MUC is unfortunate, it added.
Recalling the statement given by chancellor of the MUC in connection with their demand, it mentioned that the authority of the institution had stated that they are unable to take any decision as chancellor of the MUC had an issued order only for admission to Master’s Degree through lateral entry for the students who are already pursuing bachelor degree at the university. Such a reply to student bodies shows the irresponsibility, it added.
