With 1,03,558 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, India recorded its highest ever single-day surge since the outbreak of the pandemic, making India the second only country after the United States to cross one lakh cases in a day. The cumulative tally reached 1,25,89,067, the Union health ministry on Monday.

As the country continued to battle the second wave of COVID-19, as many as 57,074 positive cases were reported from Maharashtra alone, the worst affected state in India.

Eight States including Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab have shown a steep rise in the COVID daily new cases, the health ministry stated.

With the new positive cases, India’s total active caseload has reached 7,41,830., comprising 5.89 per cent of the country's total positive cases.

In addition to this, 478 more deaths were recorded in the country in a span of 24 hour, taking the death toll to 1,65,101.

Meanwhile, 52,847 recoveries were registered in a span of 24 hours, pushing the national cumulative recoveries to 1,16,82,136. The national recovery rate is 92.8 per cent, the ministry added.
