After a long dry spell, several parts of Northeast India region, including Manipur, received rainfall on Tuesday that brought the temperature down.
The sudden rainfall brought some respite to the parched and dusty weather in Manipur which has been facing the problem of water scarcity for a long spell.
The Earth Science Ministry had alerted in a release that under the influence of strong lower level southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with thunderstorm and lightning at isolated places are very likely over Northeast India during March 29-April 2 with maximum activity on March 30-31, 2021.
The ministry stated isolated heavy falls on March 29 and April 1 and isolated heavy to very heavy fall on March 30-31 are very likely over south Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram. Isolated heavy falls are likely over Arunachal Pradesh on April 1, 2021.
It may cause landslides and inundation of low-lying areas at some places over south Assam, Meghalaya,Tripura and Mizoram during March 30-April 1, 2021, the ministry added.
Following the weather forecast, the ministry stated expected impact of the rainfall in Assam Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura strong winds may damage plantation, horticulture and standing crops, injure people and cattle at open places.
In view of it, the ministry suggested precautionary measures to be followed in rain-hit states.
1. Stay indoors, close windows & doors and avoid travel if possible.
2. Take safe shelters; do not take shelter under trees.
3. Do not lie on concrete floors and do not lean against concrete walls.
4. Unplug electrical/electronic appliances.
5. Immediately get out of water bodies.
6. Keep away from all the objects that conduct electricity.
7. Farming operations may be suspended during the event.
Impact expected due to heavy rainfall over South Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura during March 29-April 1.
1. Localised flooding of roads, water logging in low lying areas and closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas of the above region.
2. Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall/snowfall.
3. Disruption of traffic due to water logging in roads leading to increased travel time.
4. Minor damage to kutcha roads.
5. Possibilities of damage to vulnerable structure.
6. Localized Landslides/Mudslides.
Action Suggested
1. Check for traffic congestion on your route before starting your journey.
2. Follow any traffic advisories that are issued in this regard.
3. Avoid going to areas that face water logging problem often.
4. Avoid staying in vulnerable structure.
