India has been elected unopposed as a non-permanent member in the UN Security Council for the 2021-22 term. With it, India joins the powerful 15-nation UNSC as a non-permanent member.
“Deeply grateful for the overwhelming support shown by the global community for India's membership of the @UN Security Council. India will work with all member countries to promote global peace, security, resilience and equity,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted on Thursday as India was elected unopposed to the UNSC as a non-permanent member for the eighth time.
India was the sole candidate vying for a non-permanent seat from the Asia-Pacific category for the 2021-22 term in the UN General Assembly elections held on Wednesday. It won 184 votes in the 193-member General Assembly.
Amid the COVID-19 related restrictions, the UN General Assembly held elections for president of the 75th session of the Assembly, five non-permanent members of the Security Council and members of the Economic and Social Council under special voting arrangements put in place at the UN headquarters.
