Awareness programme on constitutionally mandated rights for ST held

The one-day awareness programme was organised by Manipur State Commission for Schedule Tribe (MSCST).

A one-day awareness programme on Constitutionally Mandated Rights for Schedule Tribe in Manipur with the theme  'Justice and Social Harmony' was held on Monday at YPA hall located at Hiangtam Lamka, organised by Manipur State Commission for Schedule Tribe (MSCST), ADC Bhavan, Chingmeirong, Imphal East.

The programme was led by chairman of MSCST S Peter Khrasi, who is a retired IRS officer, along with MSCST members Tara Manchin Hangzo and Lungtheona Rongmei.

Delivering his keynote address, Peter Khrasi said that “I request for the prosperity of the coming generation and so let us end our ego and unite.”

He continued that though he is not a politician and not associated with any of the political parties, however he said that the present CM’s effort is laudable. Biren is the first who has taken initiative for the hills people with programmes like ‘Go to Hills’ and other village programmes in the hills, he added.

During the programme, discourse on constitutionally mandated rights for ST with special reference to Manipur was led by two legal experts as resource persons namely Biakhoih Guite and Khupchinpau Guite. They educated the participants about the differences in constitutional rights and legal rights. The resource persons also discoursed on various rights of ST which are empowered through various ‘Acts’ by the Parliament of India.

The programme was attended by academicians, politicians, social workers and others.
