At least five people were killed and several others injured in an explosion that occurred at Gharda Chemicals in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district early Saturday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives due to the explosion in the chemical factory and conveyed his condolence to the victims’ families.

In a tweet, the prime minister said, "Saddened by the loss of lives due to an explosion at a factory in Ratnagiri district. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon."

While the cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained, the injured were rushed to a hospital for treatment and 40-50 people have been rescued form the chemical factory, sources said.
