National Sports University, a gift to players of Manipur: Education Minister S Rajen Singh

The minister maintained that renowned boxer Mary Kom was inducted to Manipur Police Department at the rank of additional SP as a mark of encouragement and honour for her achievements in sports.

Manipur Education Minister S Rajen Singh on Sunday said that the National Sports University, Manipur, is a gift to the talented players and sports lovers of the state and no section or organisation of the state should claim for credit in this regard.

The minister was speaking as chief guest at the opening ceremony of 1st State Level Open Volleyball Tournament, 2021 held at Heirangoithong Volleyball Ground, Imphal West on Sunday. He said that the state is famous for its rich culture and sports and it has produced many talented players who have brought laurels to the state and country as a whole.

He maintained that renowned boxer Mary Kom was inducted to Manipur Police Department at the rank of additional SP as a mark of encouragement and honour for her achievements in sports. She has also been nominated as MP in Rajya Sabha. This is a simple example that the state is respecting and encouraging sport talents of the state, he added.

As a part of the opening event, a floral tribute was paid to the departed souls of the unfortunate incident that occurred on March 14, 1984 at the Heirangoithong volleyball ground. Minister Rajen also appreciated the members of Young Men’s Development Organisation (YMDO), Heirangoithong for organising the event.

The tournament was sponsored by social worker Soraisam (O) Sagolsem Kebi, who is also the managing director of Chumthang Shannapung.
