Leimatak River sweeps away 19-year-old villager

The unfortunate incident happened due to the irresponsibility of the National Hydro Electric Project Corporation (NHPC) in releasing excess water without warning the nearby villagers, RNYOM said.

Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation, Manipur (RNYOM) has stated that one Jianthailung Riamei, 19, Soubunglong (Leisok) village Part II was swept away by Leimatak River while he was crossing the river on Saturday.

A release issued by president, RNYOM Nangakdai (Nicholas) Gonmei stated that it happened when he was coming back after grazing his buffalo on the other side of the riverbank. The unfortunate incident happened due to the irresponsibility of National Hydro Electric Project Corporation (NHPC) in releasing excess water without warning the nearby villagers, it said.

The body was retrieved after two days on Sunday after a hectic search by a team led by president Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation, Manipur (RNYOM) and the youths from surrounding villages, it stated. Many such incidents have happened before since the completion of NHPC, it added.

RNYOM strongly condemned NHPC and urged to set up a proper warning system in disaster prone areas. It appealed to the NHPC to make rightful compensation to the victim’s family at the earliest, the release said. If not compensated, RNYOM will initiate stringent action against NHPC and its authorities concerned, it added.
