After humdrum months of COVID-19 crisis, comes a respite for bibliophiles and hundreds of people, young and old have been thronging The Readers Book Store inside Manipur University campus since Friday to attend the ongoing Mega Book Sales.

While the people of the state have missed the annual Imphal Book Fair organised by the State Central Library in collaboration with Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation, Kolkata for the year 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, apparently the lockdown has compelled many people to cultivate reading habits as well.

Speaking to the media, coordinator of The Readers Book Store Salam Chingkheinganba said, “We have been organising such book sales from time to time. Our priority is to cultivate reading habits among the people especially the youths and students by making the books affordable for them while at the same time catering to the needs of readers regarding books that are not readily available for them.”

As such, the ongoing sales are giving offers like ‘buy two get one free’ and a discount of as much as 50 percent on selected titles to encourage people to buy and read books, he said.

The coordinator maintained that the majority of the visitors being women is also a positive sign.

Meanwhile, when asked about his experience, one visitor, Goutam Akham who is pursuing B.Ed., said that compared to the Imphal Book Fair, the visitors are not distracted as there is only one bookstore.

In terms of the volume of books, it cannot be compared with the Imphal Book Fair but in terms of quality, the ongoing sales are valuable to us, he added.

He maintained that the said bookstore has always been his favorite as the books available are curated by experts.

Besides, the style of ownership is collective and they focus on the availability of books while sale and profit becomes secondary, he added.
