The month-long Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) protest, bandhs and strikes and the shifting of the school headmaster for Catholic School Canchipur in 2019 adversely affected studies for about two to three months, said 16-year-old Rahul Naorem, who shares the third position with Khumanthem Bobosana in the Manipur HSLC board examination 2020.

Rahul is the son of one Naorem Jiboi Singh and Athokpam Shantibala Devi from Arapti Mayai Leikai. Both his parents are teachers in government institutions.

Rahul said that he began early preparations for the Board examination when he got enrolled in Class 10, following the advice of his teachers in the school. He studied for about six to seven hours in a day and maintained a daily routine.

Speaking to the media at Arapti Mayai Leikai on Monday, Rahul said, “I was expecting to secure first position or at least in second place. But my marks for subjects like Manipuri and English were lower than my expectation since I was giving more focus in other subjects like Maths and Science.”

Rahul’s father, Naorem Jibon Singh said that frequent bandhs and strikes in the state are a hindrance for parents while sending their child to tuitions and even schools. Students should be exempted from participating in protest and bandhs as much as possible he said and added there were many instances in the state where students received injuries while protesting.

He said that parents have the most important responsibility in shaping the career of a student. Apart from sending children to schools and tuitions as well as fulfilling other needs, they should be constantly monitored so that they maintain the habit of studying on a daily basis, he said.

Every family has problems for different reasons. But those problems should not reach the ears of the students as it can affect their studies and their lives, said Jibon. He said that schools also have an important role in shaping the lives of a student since students spend most of the time in their schools.

Earlier, there was a vast gap between private schools and government schools in terms of facilities and administration. However, the situation is getting better under the present government as government schools are also considerably improving, Jibon said.

If the previous governments had given more emphasis and taken more steps for betterment of government schools, the situation of the government schools would be much better than the present situation, added Jibon.

Rahul’s mother said that her son is choosy in eating habits and she tried hard to provide all his needs so that he can study well. She said that parents must strictly see and make sure that their children do not have bad companions.

Since many youths are active in social media and games in the present day, she advised that children should be allowed to own a private phone, only when they are old enough to understand what is good and bad for them.

Rahul dedicated his success to parents, private tuition teachers and all his teachers in the Catholic School Canchipur. He has an ambition to become a doctor since his family also wants him to become one.

Rahul informed that he joined tuitions for English and Maths in ninth standard but he started taking tuitions for all the subjects only when he started class 10 as he had aimed to be the topper in the BOSEM examination.
