Awareness programme on ill effects of drug abuse held

A one-day awareness and sensitisation programme on Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse under Nasha Mukt Bharat Campaign, Thoubal was held at SECDO Hall, Kshetri Leikai, Thoubal on Sunday.

With a view to discuss about the ill effects of drug abuse and raise awareness against it, the District Social Welfare Office, Thoubal organised a one-day awareness and sensitisation programme on Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse under Nasha Mukt Bharat Campaign, Thoubal at SECDO Hall, Kshetri Leikai, Thoubal on Sunday.

The programme was organised in association with Social Educational and Cultural Development Organisation (SECDO), KRC, Kshetri Leikai Women Development Association and Youth for Tomorrow (YFT) Kshetri Leikai. It was attended by councillor of Ward No. 3. Thoubal Kshetri Leikai, Puyam Joteshwar Meitei; member of Nasha Mukt Bharat Campaign Committee Thoubal, Yumnam Laksman Singh; retired district youth co-ordinator, NYK Chandel, Waikhom Ibohal Singh; and psychiatrist and member secretary of Manipur State Mental Health Authority cum DNO, District Mental Health Society, Chandel, Dr Khangenbam Robindro Singh as chief guest, president, guests of honour and resource persons respectively.

The entire speakers of the programme appealed to the participants to take every advantage of such programme and spread the message of drug free society to all the families in the district. They urged the need for reduction in both demand and supply of drugs in the community and also asked the youths to know more about their role in fighting drugs in the society. They also appealed to the CVOs and government to work collectively towards achieving a society free from drug menace and its implications.

The resource person in his speech encouraged the participants to tackle the problem of drug addicts together by referring them to hospitals and integrated rehabilitation centres (TRCA). He expressed the importance of a supportive environment to reduce addicts from relapse. He also asked the youth to focus in capacity building and to take full advantage of such awareness. He mentioned that self realisation is the most important quality to prevent drug abuse and further expressed the need of counselling in order to enhance recovery of an addict.
