Indian soldier from Northeast killed in Pakistan shelling in Poonch

Two other Indian Army personnel of the Assam unit were injured as the Pakistan Army carried out shelling along LoC in the Shahpur-Kerni Sector of J-K.

An Indian Army personnel of the Assam unit was killed in shelling by Pakistan Army along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday night, officials said.

Three Indian Army personnel of the Assam unit posted in the Shahpur-Kerni Sector of J-K were injured as the Pakistani Army violated the ceasefire and carried out shelling on the forward post, the defence officials said, adding that the injured were immediately rushed to hospital.

However, one of them, 29-year-old Sepoy Lungambui Abonmei from Northeast region, succumbed to his injuries, the officials said.

Expressing condolence to the family, PRO Guwahati, Ministry of Defence tweeted: "Salute the Supreme sacrifices of Sep Lungambui Abonmei, Deepest condolence to the family".

The Pakistani firing and shelling on forward posts and villages in Poonch and Rajouri also claimed the lives of Havaldar P Mathiazhagan in Sunderbani Sector of Rajouri district on June 4, and  Naik Gurcharan Singh in Rajouri Sector on June 10.

The other two soldiers who were injured on Saturday attack, 29-year-old Lienkhothien Senghon and 21-year-old Tangsoik Kwianiungar, have been airlifted to the Command Hospital in Udhampur for treatment, the officials said.

The Pakistan Army continued firing along LoC, in Rampur Sector of Baramulla, on Sunday morning. "On 14 June 2020, in the morning hours, Pakistan initiated an Unprovoked Ceasefire Violation (CFV) along the LoC in Rampur by firing mortars and other weapons," said defence spokesperson Lt Col Rajesh Kalai as quoted in reports.
