The proscribed umbrella organisation Alliance For Socialist Unity, Kangleipak (ASUK) has expressed concerns over the present condition of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Indian nation and the state.
On June 8, medical expert WHO, Michael Ryan expressed fear the COVID-19 positive count in India is on the verge of exploding and about to go off the charts, said a joint statement signed by chairman Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) N Oken and president Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) Ksh Laba Meitei.
On June 9, Delhi medical minister Satyendra Jain said that though the situation has reached a stage of community spread in Delhi, they are unable to make an official announcement of the fact since the central government has refrained from doing the same, it said.
Director, AIIMS, Delhi Dr Randeep Guleria also said that there is evidence of community spread occurring at some hotspots. Assam Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 10, announced that ‘community infection’ is occurring in Guwahati, Assam, the release said.
As per the latest updates available at the time of filing of this report, there has been a total of 3,09,603 positive cases in India while 8, 890 people have so far died from the disease, ASUK said. It added that India now ranks 4th among the top countries with the highest number of positive cases.
The release further said that now, the state of Maharashtra alone has a higher number of positive cases than China. Mumbai now exceeds Wuhan in a matter of thousands, it said. Above all, renowned Indian microbiologist Dr Punit Bedi stated that the number of positive cases is seemingly low because not enough tests are being done. He stated that the actual count would be more than twice the current figure, the release said, the release said. It means that the total count of positive cases would have reached more than 6,19,206, which is more than the number of positive cases in USA and Brazil, the release said.
In a press meet held on June 9, Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia and medical minister Satyendra Jain stated that the present condition in Delhi is about to go out of control. He calculated that by July 31, there will be 5, 50, 000 cases in Delhi. He said that there will be a requirement of around 80, 000 beds by July 31 but there are only 9,000 hospital beds in Delhi, it added. He also announced that there can be no way all these arrangements can be made, while stating there is a shortage of ventilators and health workers, it said.
In a similar manner, the number of positive cases in Maharashtra including Mumbai is about to explode, ASUK said. The Wall Street Journal has reported that the situation in Mumbai is worse than a war zone. 80 percent of hospital beds in Mumbai have been taken over by the state government to treat COVID-19 patients, it said.
Till June 9, a total of 1,871 Mumbai police have been tested positive while 21 have died so far of the diseases. Community spread is also happening in other states of India such as Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, the release said. In Chennai and Ahmedabad, the situation is highly alarming. With the return of lakhs of migrant workers from metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Ahmedabad to their villages, it can be said that the infected persons have reached every nook and corner of the country. Most of them were not put into quarantine after reaching their respective homes, the release said. There is a possibility of them spreading the virus everywhere during their travel. The migrant workers in huge numbers, jam packed in trains, buses, trucks and autos without maintaining any social distancing among them.
This is why West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee named Shramik Trains as ‘Corona Express’, the release said. This situation itself in West Bengal is not better from the rest, it added. The state was recently hit hard by cyclone ‘Amphan’ and 50 workers of NDRF became positive of the virus while trying to save the people from the natural calamity. One can only imagine how much the virus would have spread during the disaster, it added.
Many VVIPs have been tested positive for the virus as well, the release mentioned. Among NSGs, more than 55 persons have been tested positive. Indian defence secretary, Ajay Kumar, former minister Jyotiraditya Scindia who recently joined BJP and his mother Madhabi Raje also tested positive for coronavirus, it said.
DMK MLA, Tamil Nadu, J Anbazhagan has died of COVID-19, it further said adding as per a report released on May 6, a total of 548 health workers in India have been tested positive. If a vaccine is not invented urgently, India may become the country having the highest number of positive cases, ASUK stated.
Going by Dr Punit Bedi’s calculations, there will be at least 53, 00, 000 positive cases in India by July 31. There are also possibilities that the figures may reach up to 60-70 lakhs, it added.
The given figures and predictions are not being mentioned merely for the sake of doomsaying or prophesying about the end of days. These are simple maths and the only the facts are being reported here, it said. There are also concerns about the arrival of a second wave of the pandemic, it added.
