The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2020 announced by the union HRD minister on Thursday has shown a very grim picture of higher education in Manipur as its only fully fledged university, Manipur University ranks below 100th position in university category.

It is for past consecutive years that the Manipur University failed to be included in the top 100 universities in the country.

Nevertheless, compared to last year, MU witnessed a slight improvement as it was included in the rank band of 151-200 in NIRF 2019 while it has been included in the rank band of 101 to 150 in NIRF 2020.

Yet on the brighter side for Manipur, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) was able to retain its position to be among the top 40 medical institutes in India by being in the 38th position.

The NIRF ranking is based on parameters that include teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity among others.

As per the ranking, IIT Guwahati secured 7th position in the overall category and is the highest for the entire Northeast region.

The other institutions in Northeast that were able to be included in top 100 institutes in overall category are Tezpur University of Assam, Gauhati University of Assam, North Eastern Hill University of Meghalaya, NIT Silchar of Assam and Mizoram University of Mizoram.

In the university category, Tezpur University, Gauhati University and Dibrugarh University of Assam and Mizoram University of Mizoram were among the universities from NE region that were included in the top 100. Indian Institute of Science in Karnataka secured the first position in this category, followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi and Banaras Hindu University, Uttar Pradesh.

President, Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU), Moirangthem Boby on the failure of MU to be included in top 100 university list, opined that there needs to be a collective effort and cooperation from every department for MU to rise in its rankings.

He cited apparent lack of infrastructures, failure to conduct and declare exams on time, no groundbreaking research works among others as reasons for MU to lag behind compared to other universities.
