As Manipur gears up for normal classes in schools and colleges to resume  from January 27 with a precautionary and COVID-19 appropriate behaviour, Education Minister Sorokhaibam Rajen Singh urged all heads of institutions to ensure clean toilets and hygienic environment in the premises.

"All the heads and principals of the schools must maintain proper hygiene in institutional premises and toilets. Along with this, the institutional head should take responsibility in arranging classes on alternative days," Rajen said.

The minister was addressing a function as chief guest at Directorate of University and Higher Education, Keishampat on Sunday, where he distributed face masks, hand sanitisers and other essential items to principals of colleges in the state.

Rajen said that in view of students’ career, resolution of reopening of schools and colleges was taken in the cabinet meeting held recently at Kamjong.

“Resuming the classes has also become mandatory, and at the same time, controlling COVID-19 pandemic is also important. To execute both, responsibilities of teachers, students and parents are very important,” Rajen stated while appealing to the people of the state to reopen classes by strictly following the SOPs framed by the government.

Rajen further said that many reasons are associated with reopening of the schools and colleges. The online classes are unable to cater to all the students and consequently, the students are more addicted to mobile phones. Apart from this, some classes are neglected particularly for classes X, and XII and bachelor degrees. The gateways for higher studies should be given more priority as these are the points from where students grow, he added.

The function was attended by officials of Directorate of University and Higher Education and principals from various colleges.
