A joint platform of Central Trade Unions has called for a nationwide protest on May 22 against the amendment of labour law and insensitivity towards the plight of workers by the central government.

A release issued by All India Trade Union Congress, Manipur state council on Wednesday stated that amendment of labour law has only added more woes to working class who are already under intense hardship due to COVID-19 induced nationwide lockdown. Many workers are either not paid or underpaid. Many are now jobless, ostracised and helpless.

Many have died in starvation or while walking back to their native states with no help from the authority. Trade unions are compelled to perceive that increasing the working hour from 8 to 12 hours a day will only aggravate the burden on working class, the release added.

The national level protest will be held at Rajghat, Delhi where representatives of various trade unions will take part. Protest will also be held at different places in Manipur as well, added the release.
