Manipur: Search operations continue ahead of Republic Day celebration

At least 11 persons were detained in Imphal on Friday.

The Manipur Police continued its cordon and search operations as part of the security measures ahead of the Republic Day celebration on January 26, in different parts of the state on Friday. 

A team of District Police, Imphal West conducted house to house search operation and verification of bail-outs at Singjamei Sapam Leikai and Leishangthem Leikai from 5:30 am to 8:20 am on Friday. During the operation, about 80 houses were searched and 180 individuals, including 10 underground bail-outs, were verified. However, no individuals were detained.

The operation was conducted by the team of District Commando, Imphal West, led by its DSP, assisted by a team of Singjamei Police Station and under the supervision of additional SP (Ops) L Amarjit.

District police, Bishnupur also conducted similar operations at two different places of the district on the same morning. A team of District Commando conducted house to house operation at Leimaram Mamang Leikai from 5:30 am to 7:30 am. During the operation around 150 houses were searched, however no individuals were detained. The team was assisted by the officer-in-charge of Nambol Police Station.

Another team of District Commando, Bishnupur, assisted by officer-in-charge of Bishnupur Police Station also conducted a search operation on Friday morning at Khuman village near Mini Secretariat, Bishnupur. In the operation that was conducted from 5:30 am to 7 am, about 100 houses were searched, however no individuals were arrested. The team was led by SDPO of Bishnupur along with officer-in-charge of the police station concerned under the supervision of additional SP (Ops), Bishnupur.

Later in the evening at about 4 pm, a team of District Commando, Imphal East conducted frisking of commuters at Palace Compound in front of City Convention Centre. During the police activity, 11 persons were detained, who failed to produce their identification documents. The detained persons were handed over to Porompat Police Station for further verification and then released.

The same team conducted operations on traffic rules and regulations in the same area and tinted film-vehicles were verified. As per motor vehicle act, applying of tinted film beyond its permissible limit is punishable under the Act. More than 20 vehicles including SUVs and other four wheelers were detained and after removing the tinted films, the vehicles were released.

Speaking to the media, additional SP (Ops), Imphal East district, Roni Mayengbam said that as per routine surprise checking and frisking the activity is being conducted assisted by a team of Porompat Police Station.

Similar surprise checking and frisking was also conducted at Andro parking and Checkon crossing. During the activity, individuals without wearing helmets and using tinted films beyond permissible limits were detained. After removing the tinted films and following the formalities of MV act the detainees were set free.

He further said such drives will continue in the days to come as preventive measures ahead of the Republic Day celebration.

On Wednesday, one person was arrested along with one pistol during random frisking by a team of Imphal East District Commando.

The arrested person has been identified as one Md Abdul Sahid alias Nanao, 35, son of Md Abdul Kalam of Kiyamgei Muslim Awang Leikai, Imphal East District from Khabeisoi. Police reported that he was arrested from auto-rickshaw parking near the Public Toilet, Imphal East district at 11:45 pm on Wednesday. A revolver marked as ‘RG NO 8871, ASU’ was recovered from his possession.

The arrested person along with the seized pistol has been handed over to Heingang Police Station for further interrogation.
