Meghalaya: Six coal miners killed in East Jaintia Hills

The incident happened when the miners were digging a tunnel at a coal mine at Sarkari near Ryambai village in East Jaintia Hills district.

At least six coal miners were killed in an accident at a coal mine at Rymbai village in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district late Thursday, according to reports.

As per the reports, the incident happened when the miners were digging a tunnel at a coal mine at Sarkari near Ryambai village. The cable attached to the bucket and the pulling crane which is used for ferrying coal broke apart and the coal miners fell into a depth of 150 feet, the reports said.

The bodies were recovered on Friday morning and were sent for post mortem to a Community Health Centre in Khliehriat, East Jaintia Hills, the reports said, adding that the deceased have been identified.

The deceased coal mine workers hailed from Assam's Karimganj district and their families have been informed to claim the bodies, the reports added.

In 2018, at least 15 miners were buried at a depth of around 370 feet in a rat-hole mine at Ksan in East Khasi hills.
