Drug peddler arrested, poppy destruction continues in Manipur

Manipur police have destroyed 1947 acres of illegal poppy cultivation at various hill districts of Manipur this crop year.

As a part of the “war on drugs” mission initiated by Manipur government, a team of Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB) arrested one drug peddler from Oinam Dam Makhong under the jurisdiction of Wangoi police station on Thursday at about 5 pm.

The arrested individual has been identified as one Nongjaimayum Md Safiqur, 35, son of late Md Azizur of Lilong Mayai Leikai, Thoubal district. The police team recovered 110 grams of heroin powder from the possession of Safiqur. A case has been registered at NAB police station further investigation.

Meanwhile, a combined forces comprising district police Chandel, NAB, NCB, 1st Manipur Rifles, 7th Manipur Rifles destroyed about 73 acres of poppy plants on Wednesday.

The drive was conducted along the western hill slopes of Thorcham village under the jurisdiction of Chakpikarong sub-division, police said.

The illegal poppy destruction drive was led by additional superintendent of police, Augustine J Khongsai and under the supervision of superintendent of police, Chandel district, N Madhunimai Singh.

For the running crop year, Manipur police have destroyed a total of 1947 acres of illegal poppy cultivation at various hill districts of Manipur.
