Four constables of NAB Manipur sent to police custody for snatching gold ornaments

Chief Judicial Magistrate of Imphal West on Thursday remanded the four police constables to six days police custody till January 19.

Four police constables posted at the Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB) Manipur have been sent to police custody till January 19 for allegedly snatching gold ornaments from a family on Moreh to Imphal road.

Chief Judicial Magistrate of Imphal West on Thursday remanded the four police constables to six days' police custody till January 19.

The four constables have been identified as Tongbram Dhanabir of Govindagram Nambol; Sapam Thansuwang of Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai; Nameirakpam Sanjoy of Kiyamgei Mamang Leikai and Sagolsem Sandhyarani Devi of Wangoi Bazar.

The four were arrested by the Singjamei police on January 13, 2021, after a complainant Nahendra Chinnaiya of Moreh Ward No 4 lodge a report to OC Singjamei that gold ornaments belonging to him and his family members were snatched away by four unknown persons while on their way to the Imphal airport.

The complainant stated in the report that the incident took place on January 10, 2021, when he had gone to drop his family members from Moreh to Imphal airport who were headed to attend a wedding in Chennai.

He said he noticed a silver colour Maruti Alto car following his Maruti van on the way at Canchipur near MU Gate. On reaching Sangaiprou Mamang Leikai along the Tiddim Road, the Alto car driver forcibly stopped his vehicle and took them towards an unknown road.

The unknown driver along with the three occupants, including a female, snatched from them two gold necklaces, four gold bangles and one gold bracelet, approximately 64 sans of gold valued around Rs 9,60,000. After snatching the gold ornaments, they immediately fled from the spot, he said.

Singjamei Police registered the case under section 384/34-IPC read with 392/397-IPC and 25 (1-c) Arms Act. They were produced through Jitsi Meet (video conference) and prayed for police custody.
