Two Manipur Student Association Delhi (MSAD) leaders, who were arrested by a combined team of Manipur Police and Delhi Police on Tuesday from New Delhi, were released on bail by the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West.
MSAD secretary Kennedy Moirangthem and member Thokchom Singajit Meitei were brought to Imphal by a police team on Thursday afternoon. They were arrested in connection with a press statement, which was issued by the student body on November 20, that strongly reacted against Education Minister S Rajen’s announcement that the Sanskrit language will be introduced in selected schools and colleges of Manipur. They were slapped with section I53A/504/505(2)/34 of IPC.
The court considered the submission of the counsel of the two members that they are students of Satyawali College and pursuing B Com fifth semester, and their semester exam is scheduled to commence on December 13.
The counsel submitted that keeping them in custody will amount to the destruction of their career. Further, it was submitted that they are first time offenders, and the chance of their absconding is virtually none as they are presently pursuing B Com programme. The court accepted their prayers to release them on bail and a PR bond of Rs 20,000 each on Friday.
The court released them with the conditions that they should not threaten, contact or induce any of the prosecution witnesses; make themselves available for interrogation by the investigating officer as and when required; not commit any offence in the future; not leave the state of Manipur without prior permission of the court till the trial is over and not temp or threat the witness or the complainant.
