With 26 active cases, Kangpokpi tops Manipur COVID-19 chart

The 17 confirmed cases from Presidency College Motbung quarantine centre were all returnees from Delhi.

With the sudden spike in COVID-19 positive cases in Manipur, Kangpokpi district topped the state  chart of COVID-19 active cases with 26 patients above Churachandpur at 18 active cases.

Meanwhile, district magistrate/DC Kangpokpi, Somorjit Salam had declared a containment measure at Presidency College, Motbung where 14 positive cases were confirmed on Saturday evening while another three confirmed cases were reported from the same institutional quarantine centre this morning.

The cumulative 17 confirmed cases from Presidency College Motbung quarantine centre were all returnees from Delhi.

On May 25, the first COVID-19 positive case in the district was confirmed from a Gujarat returnee under surveillance at BIET Centre, Leikop followed by two Pune returnees at Damdei Christian College, Taloulong and another six Pune returnees at Goma Devi High School, Toribari.

Subsequently, containment measures was declared by the district magistrate/DC Kangpokpi in the geographical areas of all these institutional quarantine centres.

Among the 26 confirmed positive cases, ten are females, including a three-year-old-child and another 16 are male. Mostly, they are between the ages of 20 to 35.

Meanwhile, SDO Kangchup Geljang, Opendro Singh had a hard time in subsidizing the protesting inmates who demanded immediate retest of the remaining individuals, excluding those positive confirmed individuals. They also demanded more toilets while highlighting their grievances faced ever since they were dropped in at the quarantine centres.

However, the officer with assistance and help from his superior officials, the medical officials and police personnel controlled the situation without any unwanted incidents late in the evening. The medical officials brought those 14 individuals to Imphal. The retest will be done for the remaining inmates of Presidency College Motbung tomorrow.

An intellectual at Kangpokpi district headquarters opined that the community under the aegis of responsible civil bodies need to initiate an awareness program extensively for the inmates at various institutional quarantine centres to educate them about the prevailing situation, mainly with regards to the functioning of quarantine centres and its facilities.

Meanwhile, 22 returnees, including a child, arrived at the district screening centre via Imphal from Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad by flight this afternoon at around 4.50 pm. They were served free food under COVID Emergency Food Kiosk initiated by ADC Sadar Hills with the assistance of KTC, KWWO and KYU after they were screened by the medical officials on duty. They were put under surveillance at SFS Daili.

Despite leading the state in active cases, Kangpokpi District Administration has been trying hard to set in a mechanisms to contain the pandemic while the community is also giving their best in all aspects in the fight against the pandemic COVID-19.
