Manipur: Court convicts couple in 2018 drugs smuggling case

The convicted couple was arrested by a combined team of Narcotic and Drug Affairs (NAB) and Tengnoupal police following the arrest of retired DSP of Manipur, Md Abdul Latif, in connection with the smuggling of large consignment of synthetic drugs on May, 6, 2018.

Special Court (ND&PS), Manipur judge W Tonen Meitei on Friday convicted two persons under ND&PS Act in connection with the smuggling of large consignment of synthetic drugs.

The convicted individuals are identified as Lalrozami Duhlian, 27, daughter of Chalmawii Duhlian of Tengnoupal district and Sougaijam Robindro, 28, son of Ibotombi of Kakching district. The convicted individuals are a couple.

Both of them were arrested by a combined team of Narcotic and Drug Affairs (NAB) and Tengnoupal police following the arrest of retired DSP of Manipur, Md Abdul Latif, in connection with the smuggling of large consignment of synthetic drugs on May, 6, 2018.

The retired DSP Md Abdul Latif was arrested on April, 2018 from his residence based on disclosure of one Manjil Ahmed Lasker who was arrested by a team of Assam Rifles at Kaimei check post on April 10, 2018 for illegal transportation of 1lakh WY tablet (weighing around 11.34kg) in his Force Cruiser vehicle. Following to disclosure from arrested individuals, police had arrested others persons namely, Nasim Banu wife of Md Latif; Md Wahab son of Abdul Wahid of Keirao Mayai Leikai; Muminur Rahaman Barbhuiya from Cachar.

The FIR had been lodged under section 22(c)/62/60(3)/29/25/21(b) ND&PS Act against them and charge sheet were also sent up by the police for trail under section 173 CrPC. However, six accused including the retired DSP were discharged on November 15, 2019 at the time of charge consideration due to deficiency of materials evidence against them.

In Friday’s verdict, observed that based on disclosure of Abdul Wahab, who was discharge from the case, the seizure huge quantity of WY tablet were sent to him by Robindro who is husband of Lalrozami Duhlian through a vehicle (Eco van).  And police seized huge quantity of WY tablet from the possession of Lalrozami on May 4, 2018 from the residence of Sougaijam Robindro, Moreh Ward No 2, Super Market.

The seizure of 5200 WY tablets and 100 gms of heroine powder including the weight of the three plastic packets shows both husband and wife have an agreement to commit unlawful act. As such, the judge opined that Sougaijam Robindro is liable for abetment and conspiracy for commission of such act to his wife and hence liable to convicted under section 29 of ND&PS act, 1985.

Both the accused were present before the court and taken into the custody of the court. The court has fixed December, 7 for sentence hearing.
