Former candidate of 2017 general assembly election, Gurumayum Birachandra Sharma, 70, alias Molecule reportedly killed his nephew with his licensed gun at his residence located at Singjamei Chingamathak Ngakraba Leirak, Imphal West on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Gurumayum Suraj Sharma, 35, son of G Gope of Singjamei Chingamathak Ngakraba Leirak, Imphal West. Gope is Molecule’s elder brother.

An eye witness reported that the incident occurred around 9:30 am at the courtyard of the deceased.

The witness said that she was cooking when the incident occurred. She heard a loud noise outside like the bursting of crackers and when she peeped out of the window, Suraj was seen running with bullet injury towards his residence which is adjacent to the accused residence.

The witness further told, “Molecule fled from the spot after he shot Suraj with his license gun and escaped on his Maruti van ambulance (white in colour) bearing registration number MN05 A6135.”

Locals rushed Suraj at Raj Medicity hospital, North AOC but he succumbed to his injuries at about 11 am at the hospital. Hospital authority told that the bullet hit on the right arm and right chest.

The body has been taken to RIMS morgue and a case has been registered at Singjamei police station for further investigation. Gurumayum Suraj Sharma was serving in BSNL as junior telecom officer.

Later, a ‘joint action committee against the brutal killing of Gurumayum Suraj Sharma’ was formed and held a public meeting in the locality.

The meeting resolved to dismantle residence and property of Molecule; to banish Molecule and his family from the locality. It was also resolved that JAC and family members will not accept the body if Molecule is not arrested within 48 hours.

The JAC also strongly condemned the police station concerned for not recovering the licensed gun and another unlicensed gun of Molecule. If the guns were recovered in time when the locals complained to the police earlier, then the incident could have been avoided, the locals contended.

The said eye witness further informed, “The incident occurred due to a land dispute and Molecule had carried out life attempt several times and has been threatening Suraj and his family members since the last 5 years.”

Locals reported that due to the threat from Molecule, family members of Suraj shifted temporarily to a nearby place within the locality.

As per resolution taken by the JAC, the residence of Molecule was destroyed by the locals without harming others’ property.
