Tree plantation, online painting competition mark World Environment Day in Tamenglong

Unlike other years, this year, the observation of World Environment Day in Tamenglong was low key owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hundreds of trees were planted in the hills of Tamenglong district HQ, Manipur on Friday as a part of the observation of World Environment Day 2020 with the theme "Celebrate Biodiversity".

Members of the Forest Department, Rainforest Club Tamenglong, 44 Assam Rifles, Tamenglong Police, and the District Council took part in the mass tree plantation at Gaidai Hills, which is located about 1.5 km away from the town.

DFO RS Arun along with Tamenglong SP Sandeep Mohurle Gopal Das, CO 44 Assam Rifles Pradeep Kumar, CEO, ADM/ADC Kajaigai Gangmei, Wildlife warden Nehemiah Panmei, Deputy RFO Promeshwor and members of the Rainforest Club Tamenglong and all the jawans and forest staffs participated in mass tree plantation.

The areas where plantation was done a few years ago were surveyed and more tree guards installed.

However, the event included painting competition among the students under the theme Celebrate Biodiversity. In a first in the district, the competition was held online owing to the COVID-19 situation. Several students of Tamenglong and outside the state took part in the competition.

A short speech by DFO Tamenglong, Arun RS was given to the students, encouraging them to participate more in conservation of forest and wildlife in the district.

The result of the painting competition was declared and position holders were given prizes and citation following social distancing protocol. Two categories of painting results were as follows:

Painting result-Category I

First Prize: PL Dhana Lakshmi, SpringField Hr Secondary School, Chennai

Second Prize: Guangjianliu Pamei, Trinity Public School, Utopia

Third Prize: Hingnamkuale Newme, United Builders School, Duigailong Village

Painting result -Category II

First Prize: Zianlu Agape Gonmei, CHI, New Lambulane, Tamenglong

Second Prize: Shivam Kumar Seth, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, UP

Third Prize: Varun Prajapati, Banaras Hindu University, UP
