Concerned over the challenges faced by the student community due to seat unavailability for admission in the state colleges, the Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has demanded the authority concerned to increase intake capacity in bachelor and master degree courses under Manipur University and DM University.

Addressing the media in a press conference, secretary general of DESAM, Leishangthem Lamyanba said that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has given an immense negative impact in the academic sector in various ways. Many students are unable to pursue their higher studies outside the state and are compelled to try for admission in the state. The current situation requires an increase in the seat capacity for admission in bachelor and master courses under the universities in the state, he added.

Lamyanba said the authority concerned does not bother about the crisis in the education sector in the state. The government should increase the seat capacity and pass an ordinance on improving the manpower and infrastructure and management in the institutes so that the seat intake can be increased, he added.

He also said that many colleges in the state have been trying to open PG courses but the government has not given approval so far and the issue of not getting admission may subside to some extent.

Lamenting the irregularities found in the admission process, Lamyanba alleged that it is very unfortunate that amidst COVID-19 many educational institutions are trying to take admission in a biased manner.

He pointed out that admission for District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) under State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) Manipur was completed without releasing the selection list. Besides this, Dhanamanjuri College of Teacher Education (DMCTE) is planning to take admission for Master in Education on mark basis, which is totally against the norms of National Council of Teacher Education, for which DESAM had strongly objected, he added.

He continued that even DM Commerce is also going to take admission on the mark basis and such conditions will create fewer chances to get admission for most of the students who took Commerce stream in Class XII. Compared to the Science and Arts stream, Commerce usually gets less percentage and the state government should give extra weightage for those who come from Commerce background, added Lamyanba.

Condemning the increase in admission fees in MU, Lamyanba said that “hiking of admission fees is unfortunate in these crucial days when every section of society is facing hardship. The authority concerned should reduce the amount.”

He also appealed to the authority of MU to conduct MU entrance examinations in a strict manner. The authority should not allow any research scholar and faculty of the university, who has conducted coaching classes for MU entrance examination, in the affairs of the entrance examination. The rule for mobile phone prohibition inside entrance examination hall should also be implemented strictly, added the secretary general of DESAM.
