Imphal West District Police seized opium weighing 14.5 kilograms from an oil tanker and arrested two persons carrying the the drugs.
According to the police, the arrest was made by a team of narcotic cell led by sub-inspector Alexander under the supervision of SP, Imphal West, K Meghachandra.
In the first incident police one Rajkumar Rai, 22, son of (Late) Narayan Rai of Tezpur, Assam on Monday at around 10:35 pm from Khuman Lampak road opposite to Hyundai Showroom, Imphal. During the verification, 17 packets of suspected contraband drugs, opium (Kani) weighing about 14.5 kilograms were recovered. The said contraband items were recovered from an oil tanker bearing registration number NLO1G- 0767, it added.
In the follow up of the case, Police reportedly arrested one Somnath Gautam, 29, of Charhajare, Senapati was arrested on Tuesday at 11 am from his residence. Both the arrested persons along with the seizures were handed over to Imphal Police Station for further necessary legal action.
Meanwhile, as a part of the continuous preventive measures ahead of the by-election, the district police of Imphal West have conducted house to house search operation in Irom Meijrao area on Wednesday.
A police team led by SDPO of Mayang Imphal Police Station and its DSP conducted the search operation and 150 houses were searched and about 400 persons including 10 bailout persons were verified.
Foot patrolling and area domination exercises were also carried out in various areas of Wangoi assembly constituency. A drive was also conducted by the police team in Wangoi area and nine persons were detained for selling and consuming local distilled indigenous country (DIC) liquor with seizure of 103 litres of the liquor.
