Covid-19 claims first victim in Meghalaya Police force

Covid-19 death toll rises to 62 in Meghalaya.

Another person, this time a 42-year-old police constable, died of Covid-19 last night taking the toll to 62. This is the first casualty in the state police force.

Pulsan Dalu, who was an armed branch constable in East Garo hills, died in Williamnagar Civil Hospital at midnight, Director of Health Services (MI) Dr Aman War said.

“The cause of death was due to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with Covid-19, bronchial asthma and hypertension,” he said.

Meanwhile, the day’s count of Covid-19 cases is 156, taking the total number of active cases to 2,437.

Dr War said fresh cases include 83 from East Khasi Hills, 31 from Ri Bhoi, 18 from West Jaintia Hills district, eight each from West Garo Hills and South West Khasi Hills, three from South Garo Hills, two from South West Garo Hills, and one each from North Garo Hills, East Garo Hills and West Khasi Hills.

Out of the 142 recovered Covid-19 patients, 90 are from East Khasi Hills, 21 from West Garo Hills, eight from Ri Bhoi, seven from East Jaintia Hills, six from East Garo Hills, four from West Jaintia Hills, and three each from West Khasi Hills and South West Garo Hills.

According to Dr War, 5,045 Covid-19 patients have been discharged so far.

The state has detected a total of 7,544 COVID-19 out of which 2,437 are active cases, 5,045 recovered and 62 deaths. East Khasi Hills district tops the list with 1,722 infections, with 33 in armed forces and paramilitary forces and 1,689 civilians. Ri Bhoi and West Garo Hills follow with 320 and 161 cases, respectively.

In other districts, 58 cases in West Jaintia Hills, 38 in South West Garo Hills, 34 in South Garo Hills, 31 in East Jaintia Hills, 31 in South West Khasi Hills, 26 in North Garo Hills, 12 in East Garo Hills and four in West Khasi Hills.

“Till date, swab samples of 1,71,415 persons have been tested, of which 1,63,871 were found negative,” the senior medical official said. There are 46,760 entrants from outside the state, he said.
