PM Modi inaugurates Atal Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh's Rohtang

The 9.02 Km long Atal Tunnel, which connects Manali to Lahaul-Spiti valley is the longest highway tunnel in the world, built at an altitude of 3,000 meters (10,000 Feet).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the Atal Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh's Rohtang.The 9.02 Km long Atal Tunnel, which connects Manali to Lahaul-Spiti valley is the longest highway tunnel in the world, built at an altitude of 3,000 meters (10,000 Feet).

The prime minister was accompanied by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and Army Chief General MM Naravane.

The tunnel reduces the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 km and the travel time by about four to five hours, the Prime Minister's Office has said.

The double-laned tunnel Atal Tunnel has been designed for traffic density of 3000 cars per day and 1,500 trucks per day with a maximum speed of 80 km per hour, the PMO said.
