The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) on Thursday organised a series of 150 mega events across the country and floral tributes to mark the celebration of the 150 years of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.
KVIC, in a release, said that its chairman, Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurated the 150 events on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti.
Northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Manipur and other states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir and Gujarat led the country with the highest number of programmes for artisans’ empowerment, it said.
It stated that a total of 10 events that include inauguration of Khadi sales emporium in different states were organised in the Northeastern states. The programmes aim at creating sustainable local employment and making artisans Aatmanirbhar (self-reliant), it said.
“Mahatma Gandhi always believed that rural resurgence was the key to the country's development. This has also been the vision of prime minister Narendra Modi,” it added.
The release maintained that the initiatives of KVIC aim at empowering farmers, women and unemployed youths by creating livelihood opportunities, increasing local production and providing new marketing platforms to Khadi institutions.
