PM Modi to hold Covid-19 review meeting with CMs, health ministers of seven worst-hit states

Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Punjab have been registering high COVID-19 incidence since the pandemic reached India. In view of it, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a high-level virtual meeting with the chief ministers and health ministers of these seven high-burden states on Wednesday.

The virtual meeting will be held to review the COVID-19 situation in the worst-hit states by the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, a release stated on Tuesday.

The above seven states account for over 63 per cent of the active cases in the country. They also account for 65.5 per cent of the total confirmed cases and 77 per cent of the total deaths in the country in a span of eight months since the pandemic spread to India. India currently has the largest number of confirmed cases in Asia and the second highest globally after the United States.

According to latest updates, India's COVID-19 tally has reached 56,46,010 and death toll touched 90,050. Of the confirmed cases, Maharashtra remains the worst-hit state with 12,42,770 cases, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

India had tested 6,53,25,779 samples for Covid-19 as of September 21 as 9,33,185 samples were tested on Monday, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Of the total sample tested, the total number of confirmed cases is 55,62,664, including 9,75,861 active cases, 88,935 deaths and 44,97,868 recovered patients.

It may be recalled that the first case of COVID-19 in India was detected on January 30, 2020.
