Two persons arrested for defying COVID-19 SOPs in Ukhrul

The two individuals roamed freely among the nearby general public, causing every chance to spread COVID-19 among the public., police said.

In a first in the district, Ukhrul Police arrested two people for breach of COVID-19 containment measures being taken up by the state and district administration.

Sub-inspector, Marchang W told this IFP correspondent that on September 10 at around 9 am, Ukhrul police received reliable information that on September 9 at around 1 pm, one returnee from Bangalore, who is a COVID-19 patient, went out from the TK Woodland COVID Care Centre, Shirui without permission from any competent authority. The patient has been identified as Vareishang Sharon, 27, son of Kanrei Sharon of Longpi village and he accompanied one villager of Lunghar village namely Phungthing Muinao, 39 years, son of Ramyang Muinao, he added.

He continued that the two individuals roamed freely among the nearby general public causing every chance to spread COVID-19 among the public. At around 3:30 pm on the same day, Vareishang returned to the COVID Care Centre at Shirui.

“This act of the two individuals is viewed as breach of COVID-19 containment measures and thereby attracting provisions under Disaster Management Act, 2005 and IPC,” said SI Marchang.

As such, a suo-moto case has been registered with filing of an FIR under Section 269 IPC and 51 of Disaster Managment Act against the two individuals for investigation, he added.

The sub-inspector further informed that Vareishang Sharon was arrested on September 10 and was produced before CJM Ukhrul on September 11 and remanded to police custody.

He will be produced before CJM Ukhrul on September 15 for judicial remand. Phungthing Muinao was arrested on Monday from Tansit Quarter Quarantine Centre, Phungreitang, Ukhrul at around 3 pm only after confirming his COVID-19 test result was negative. He will be produced before CJM Ukhrul on September 15, he added.

In this regard, a total of 15 individuals have been traced and tested and the concerned doctor informed that all their test results have been found negative.
