Assam’s COVID-19 death toll nears 500 mark

Assam on Sunday reported 16 more deaths due to COVID-19 infection.

Assam’s COVID-19 death toll climbed to 469 as 16 more patients died due to the illness, according to the state health department on Monday. With it, the death rate in the state has risen to 0.32 per cent.

Of the 16 new deaths, eight were reported from Kamrup Metropolitan and Sivasagar, two each from Golaghat, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Nalbari and Dhubri districts.

The state’s COVID-19 positive count rose to 1,41,763 with the report of 1,292 new patients infections on Sunday, state Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Till date, Assam has tested 27,17,795 samples so far.

The health minister informed that the new cases included 422 from Kamrup Metropolitan, 134 from Jorhat and 107 from Lakhimpur. With it, the active cases in the state stands at 28,158 active cases.

"Only 20% of the total positive patients are active now. Rest, all have been discharged. Gratitude and best wishes to team doctors," Sarma said. He said the recovery tally has reached 1,13,133 as 2,251 more patients have recovered and discharged from the covid care facilities on Sunday.

Meanwhile, three COVID-19 cases reported in the state have migrated to other parts of the country.

In view of the pandemic situation in the state, regular classes in all educational institutions, including coaching classes, remain closed in the state and lockdown in all containment zone continues till September 30.
