All Manipur Hill Districts MGNREGS Employees Association (AMHDMEA) has resolved to begin agitation from September 16 unless there is positive response from the state government to regularise their service.

President of AMHDMEA, Sholim Haokip has informed IFP correspondent that the MGNREGS employees of valley districts from Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur were regularised by the state government in 2016, whereas the MGNREGS employees of hill districts are left behind as less deserving.

“In spite of our repeated appeal, the government has not materialised the demand and it is clear that there is unequal treatment towards the employees from the hills and from the valley. We are compelled to take up democratic course of action, if the government fail to ignore our long suffering,” said Haokip.

While saying that he was employed as an MGNREGS employee of Chandel district in 2007, he added that a total of 129 MGNREGS staffs are currently employed as technical assistance, MIS computer operators and others in the five hill districts of the state namely, Chandel, Churachandpur, Senapati, Tamenglong and Ukhrul.

Vice-president of AMHDMEA, Meghachandra L said that he was employed in MGNREGS at Kasom Khullen Block in 2014 and his colleagues employed in the valley under MGNREGS have been regularised.

President of Dedicated MGNREGS Staffs of Ukhrul and Kamjong Districts, Yaoleithing AW said that a total of 34 MGNREGS employees are looking after the implementation of the said scheme in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts. The flagship programme was launched in 2008 at Ukhrul and out of the 34 employees, 10 are engaged as technical assistance and 24 are being utilised as MIS staff, he added.

Tangkhul Naga Wungnao Long (TNWL) has also expressed concern over the state government’s continued failure to fulfil the demand of AMHDMEA for regularisation of their service. Secretary of TNWL, DS Zimik has told IFP correspondent that they will support any democratic steps taken by AMHDMEA related to their demand. He also recalled the statement of the chief minister on June 4, 2019 during the cabinet meeting held at Ukhrul, where at the sideline of the cabinet meeting, CM Biren had mentioned that if the MGNREGS employees from the valley had been regularised, then, the MGNREGS employees in the hills districts should be given the same yardstick.

The Tangkhul Naga Chiefs’ Association has appealed to the state government to fulfil the demands of the AMHDMEA.
