Imported Brazil nuts by-products found contaminated

Food safety commissioner issues health advisory

The office of the State Food Safety Commissioner, secretariat Health department has issued a health advisory stating that Brazil nuts by-products imported to India are found to be contaminated with ‘Salmonella Anatum’ and ‘Salmonella Typhimurium’ as per an alert by the International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN).  

The advisory issued by additional secretary (Health and FW) H Rosita stated that following a letter sent by the joint director (RCD), Food Safety and Standard Authority of India Parveen Jargar, all the designated officers (food safety administration) and food safety officers are directed to take necessary actions including complete recall of the products from the market.

It stated that the implicated products may pose health risk in case of consumption by the public due to contamination. As per the INFOSAN alert, the product ‘Brazil & Sultana with peanuts and almonds’ of the brand, ‘Eat Natural’ has been found to be contaminated, it added.  

They come in sizes of 35g bar, 4× 35g multipack, 50g bar, 3×50g counter pack, 20×50g assorted mix pack with the ‘best before dates’ of August, September, October, November and December 2020, January, February, March, April, May and June 2021, as per the advisory.

It further stated that another product found to be contaminated is ‘Natural Bar Fruit & Nuts’ of the brand ‘HEMA’. The come in 50g bar, 16×50g shelf pack with the ‘best before dates’ of August 31 and November 30 of 2020 and February 28 and March 31 of 2021, it stated.

The health advisory further stated that the consumers are advised not to consume the mentioned products and to return back the product, if purchased, to the shop/store. The information is being provided to avoid inadvertent consumption of the implicated products, it added.
