Former United Naga Council (UNC) president Puni Modoli passed away on Friday in New Delhi, the council said.
Puni was a dynamic leader who had rendered his best service to the people. He was also known for his flair for writing.
The National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM) has expressed shock on the demise of Puni after undergoing treatment at Fortis Hospital, New Delhi.
"We express our condolences to the bereaved family members and all the loved ones left behind," said the NSCN-IM in its condolence message issued on Saturday.
According to the NSCN-IM, Puni was "one Naga social activist" who was full of zeal to give his service for the Naga people. He was in banking profession earlier. "But his inclination to go full throttle in the service of his Naga people in Manipur ultimately led to his resignation as General Manager, SBI," said the NSCN-IM. Eventually, Puni went on to capture the trust of "his Naga people and become the president of UNC (United Naga Council)", the NSCN-IM message added.
Puni's deep interest and contribution towards the Naga political movement is reflected in his philosophical thought and writings, said the NSCN-IM. In his death, Nagas have lost a patriotic leader who left his footprints for posterity, it added.
"In this moment of grief, our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family members. We pray that peace and comfort be given to them to hold on the loss. May the soul of Puni Modoli rest in peace!," said the NSCN-IM.
