13 injured in scuffle between two villages, police deployed

A strong contingent of police force has been sent in and presently guarding the area to prevent further untoward incidents.

A major scuffle took place between locals of Salungpham village under Thoubal district and Ringpam village under Tengnoupal district around 4 pm on Friday on land issues  Altogether, 13 villagers of Salungpham were injured in the fight.

A strong contingent of police force has been sent in and are presently guarding the area to prevent further untoward incidents. As per sources, tensions were brewing between Salungpham and Ringpam village since the past few days concerning the village Santipur khunou which is located between the two villages.

To resolve the matter, it was agreed upon that the representatives of the three villages will come to a meeting at Salungpham on August 31. For the meeting that was to be conducted under the aegis of pradhan, Salungpham GP, a five member team from Salungpham went around noon time to hand over a written statement to three villages namely Tolen, Maryland, and Ringpam.   

After handing over the statements to the village authority of Tolen and Maryland, the team went to provide the same to the chief of Ringpam village. However, they were allegedly stopped from entering the village gate and not allowed to provide the statement, sources said.

The villagers of Ringpam allegedly raised many issues instead of allowing the team to enter the village. After the team returned back, the locals started to erect fences in Salungpham Khunou. A sudden attack allegedly ensued from Ringpam village with gunfire, stones and slingshots, causing injuries to 13 villagers (including male and females) of Salungpham village.

A strong team of Thoubal district police, led by SP S Ibomcha rushed to the area and brought the situation under control. The police personnel are guarding the area at present, to prevent further violence from occurring again.
