The United NGOs Mission Manipur (UNMM) has expressed their displeasure with the prevailing social stigma, attitude of the government as well as the alleged lack of governance and irresponsibility of the healthcare centres in protecting and safeguarding the basic human rights of the general public.
A release stated that there has been gross victimisation and discrimination of women and young girl within short period of time in the state amid pandemic. UNMM condemned victimising and discrimination to women by denying right to access health care, it added.
UNMM urges the government and authority concerned to establish a Special Investigation Team (SIT) chaired by a retired justice of state High Court or the Supreme Court with an experienced police, retired medical doctors with the integrity for impartiality, it stated. An independent investigation should be carried out for the cases of death due to denial of access to treatment in the hospitals in Manipur, especially the death of Kanpatliu Kamei and Laishram Sandya, it added.
The government and health department should provide a full proof reason for denying admission to the victims in various hospitals like JNIMS, RIMS, Raj medicity and Shija hospital, it stated. It urged for the formation of an expert committee to undergo enquiries into the death of Kimkhochin Khongsai while delivering her child at Churachandpur district hospital due to negligence by the medical staff and the death of an infant on Saturday, it added.
The government should segregate hospitals and health care centres for treatment of COVID-19 patients and non COVID-19 or general treatment of the patients, it stated. Testing centres for COVID-19 and availing rapid antigen testing, TrueNet centres in pulse in all districts should be made available, it stated.
It appealed for mass testing for COVID-19 in the state and formation of a task force in each and every colony led by local clubs/village authority/civil organisations. Effective policy should be framed for green revolution and other allied activities from short term to long term period to surplus our food to avoid food dependency from outside, it added.
The COVID-19 pandemic crisis in all respects should be managed properly enacting special policy to avoid hunger of daily wage workers, poor, migrant people, differently abled people etc, it added.
