The United People’s Revolutionary Front of Manipur (UPRFM) has called for a 16-hour total general strike across the state on Independence Day.
However, essential services such as medical services, water and fire services will be exempted from the general strike, said a release issued by information and publicity secretary L Rolin alias Thoupangba Meitei.
The UPRFM has appealed to the people of the state to support the boycott of the 74th Independence Day, it stated. Every Manipuri is aware of the fact that Manipur was an independent land a day ahead of India, it also has its own governance and it was among independent nations in SouthEast Asia, it added.
Manipur had its own constitution, “The Manipur State Constitution Act 1947” and it was already implemented since 1947 but India framed its constitution only in 1951, the release stated.
In 1948, the adult franchise was practiced in Manipur and the first assembly session was also held in the year 1948 at the present Johnstone Higher Secondary School, it stated. However, in 1949 Manipur was forcibly annexed by India, the release stated.
The UPRFM has further expressed concern over COVID-19 pandemic in the state, it added.
