Erendro arrested by police from his home

The police followed him on the way to home and arrested him at around 11.30 am, he said.

Activist Erendro Leichombam has been arrested by Porompat police from his home located at Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai at around 11.30 am Sunday.

According to police, Erendro Leichombam and another Lewis Salam, 24 son of Bihari Salam of Thangmeiban Hijam Leikai were also arrested in an FIR No. 141(7)2020 PRT PS u/s 124A/153/505 IPC registered against them at Porompat Police Station. They will be produced before the magistrate concerned for police remand.

Erendro's brother informed the Imphal Free Press that his brother has been staying under quarantine at one hotel located at Imphal. Erendro returned home today after completing his quarantine period, he informed. 

The police followed him on the way to home and arrested him at around 11.30 am, he said.

Erendro Leichombam had filed an anticipatory bail under 438 CrPC on August 5 before the High Court of Manipur and the hearing was fixed on August 7. He was arrested by police in connection with the sedition case filed against him.

Erendro, the political activist was charged under sedition case for a Facebook post. Manipur Police filed a sedition case against him for a comment he made on his Facebook account on July 25.

Police have not specified the post but it is suspected that he has been charged with sedition for his comment “Meenai Macha” (son of servant) posted against the photo of the newly elected Rajya Sabha MP, Leishemba Sanajaoba- bowing and greeting to Amit Shah.

He was charged under section 153 (causing provocation to riot), 124A (sedition) and 505 (public mischief) of IPC by police. It may be mentioned that Erendro had been arrested in the past for criticising the BJP led government in the state.
